The Heart of An Anarchist: Elia Kazan, The Artist as Outsider
The reputation of Elia Kazan, one of America's great film-makers, theatre directors and writers, who died in 2003 at the age of 94, has divided opinion for over 50 years – for political reasons.   This article is in part a review of his massive 1988 autobiography, A Life, an unputdownable read which has been described as perhaps the best ever show-business autobiography, and a brief overview of some his films, including A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), On the Waterfront (1954), Wild River (1960), Splendor in the Grass (1961) and the classic immigrant movie America America (1963).

This essay is a tribute to a radical thinker, writer, teacher and prophet.

Free Bobby Fischer! or: The Hounding of a Chess Legend
Bobby Fischer, the world chess champion of 1972, has been detained in an immigration cell in Japan since July, in an alleged plot by the US government to entrap him by revoking his passport and deporting him to the US to answer charges of violating international 'sanctions' in 1992. This is a monstrous injustice, a petty and vindictive attack on an individual. Bobby Fischer is no threat to anyone.
