Cinema

For me good movies, like good talks, are those that don't let me sleep at night!

These are some of the movies that I have selected as being my favorite...

Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo

For some men the Civil War wasn't hell. It was practice! Three gunmen set out to find a hidden fortune. Who will walk away with the cash?

2001: A Space Odyssey

A very influential film and still a class act, even after 25 years. Based on a short story by Arthur C. Clarke, the story is told as a montage of impressions, music and careful attention to subliminal detail. 2001 is the kind of film that some people will love, and others will hate. This movie is concerned with intelligence as the division between animal and human, then asks a question: what is the next division? There are many different interpretations and Kubrick himself has avoided answering questions just to keep the confusion going.

Schindler's List

Oskar Schindler is a vain, glorious and greedy German businessman who becomes unlikely humanitarian amid the barbaric Nazi reign when he feels compelled to turn his factory into a refuge for Jews. The movie is based on the true (? - opinions differ...) story of Oskar Schindler who managed to save about 1100 Jews from being gassed at the Auschwitz concentration camp. A testament for the good in all of us. The list was life...

Shawshank Redemption

Andy was unfairly condemned to lifetime sentence, accused of killing his wife and lover. Shawshank was his new house for twenty years. During those years Andy became friend of other prisoners, and he planned a splendid flight...

Leon – The Professional

A perfect assassin. An innocent girl. They have nothing left to lose except each other. He moves without sound. Kills without emotion. Disappears without trace. Only a 12 year old girl knows his weakness...

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain

Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, is looking for love and perhaps for the meaning of life in general. Meanwhile she decides to help those around her and along the way.

Pulp Fiction

The stories of two mob hit men, a boxer and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.

Américan History X

Edward Norton plays Derek Vinyard, a violent but also intelligent neo-nazi. After killing two black people who tried to break his car, Derek is sent down for a couple of years. Meanwhile, his younger brother Danny is busy following in his brother's footsteps. After certain incidents in prison Derek decides to reform on his way out. Once out, he realizes how quickly in number his old gang of nazi thugs has grown and wonders if he can save his brother. This is a brilliant film. Perhaps what disturbs me the most is the way that Edward Norton looks so brutal, yet sounds so intellectual throughout the film. Although the film contains a constant strong theme of violence, it is always justified in portraying a picture of racial tension. Neither black nor white people are "judged" in the film, it's primary focus being to outline that it's peoples brutality that causes a racial divide, not either race in general.

The Straight Story

Alvin Straight is a very old man with a quiet life in a small country town. When his brother gets seriously sick, he decides to put away their differences and visit him after many, many years. So, alone, he begins a long journey through hundreds of miles, just to see again his brother, even if it's the last thing he will ever do. The way how David Lynch finishes the story is great.
